Why We Exist

We exist to champion the presence of Black Designers in Luxury

Black designers have long been cultural pioneers, shaping global trends and defining the aesthetics we admire on runways, in stores, and across social media. However, despite their undeniable influence, the luxury fashion industry has too often relegated their contributions to the margins.

For far too long, the luxury space has been perceived as out of reach for Black designers, with an unspoken expectation to "stay in your lane." While Black designers deserve the freedom to create across all price points, they are frequently steered toward mass-market and, at best, contemporary categories, while being discouraged from pursuing the luxury sector, a space where their talent also deserves to thrive.

All tiers of fashion are important and Black designers should feel welcomed, platformed, and empowered to create across them all. It’s time to embrace Black designers as essential to the luxury world they’ve always helped to shape.

Why Representation Matters

Luxury representation creates pathways to economic equity, opportunity, and inclusion. When Black designers succeed in the luxury space, it drives job creation, opens doors for future generations, and expands both cultural and economic opportunities for our communities.

Black designers, working with the finest materials and delivering exceptional craftsmanship, deserve to earn for their work at a level that matches their peers. Just as we advocate for equity in corporate boardrooms and government, we must also champion it in the world of fashion.

We envision a future where Black luxury is ubiquitous, and choosing a Black luxury designer is as natural and celebrated as selecting brands like Dior or Hermès. Black representation in luxury is about building a more equitable and inclusive industry.

Beyond Performative Support

The events of 2020, marked by the global reckoning following the murder of George Floyd, sparked a wave of performative support for Black-owned brands. While well-intentioned, much of that support was fleeting. We believe in making this movement permanent, a fundamental, ongoing part of how people shop. Shopping from Black designers across all tiers shouldn’t be a momentary trend; it should be a natural and enduring choice, woven into the fabric of everyone’s wardrobe.

We created this platform to make it easy for everyone, regardless of who you are, to discover and shop from Black luxury designers. Verbal support is always appreciated by the brands, but it’s purchases that truly make a difference. They ensure longevity and help these brands thrive in a space that has historically excluded them.

The Challenges Black Designers Face

The luxury industry is one of the most expensive, exclusive, and challenging spaces to navigate. For Black designers, these barriers are even higher. Lack of funding, limited representation in retail, and systemic biases create hurdles that can feel insurmountable. Adding to these challenges, Black luxury designers are at a higher risk of extinction than any other category in the fashion industry. Without the visibility, resources, and consistent support they need to grow, these brands face disproportionate odds of disappearing altogether.

To thrive in this space, Black luxury brands need more than applause; they need consumer purchases, industry leaders to foster meaningful collaborations, and investors to actively champion their vision.

Celebrating Black luxury today means investing in their continued success and ensuring their legacy thrives for future generations.

Why it matters

Beyond a moral imperative, championing Black luxury is a smart economic choice. Black consumers contribute over $1.6 trillion to the U.S. economy annually, with a significant portion spent on fashion and beauty. Investing in Black-owned luxury brands celebrates creativity, drives economic empowerment, creates jobs, and enriches the entire fashion ecosystem. It also addresses systemic inequities while honoring the unique perspectives and cultural richness Black designers bring to their work; designs that challenge norms and inspire innovation.

Black designers are disproportionately underrepresented, with less than 1% of luxury brands in major retail outlets being Black-owned or having a Black creative director. Black luxury brands brands face extraordinary challenges in a space that is notoriously exclusive and expensive, from limited funding and retail opportunities to systemic biases. Every purchase sustains their businesses, creates jobs, uplifts communities, and preserves a legacy of creativity for future generations. Shopping with these brands ensures that Black luxury becomes a celebrated and permanent part of global fashion rather than a fleeting trend.
